My husband is a warehouse shopping fanatic (yes, he’s one of those people who buy in bulk). He recently renewed his BJs membership, and as an incentive to renew, BJs gave him a gift card to restaurants.com. He was given a redemption code to enter on the website, which produced a long list of unknown eateries. Most of the restaurants listed were Asian or Mexican. Only a couple offered American food. He picked Vick’s Neighborhood Restaurant, promising great steak and seafood.
Vick’s Restaurant Review
Vick’s wasn’t what I expected, and it was full of surprises. When we drove up, I noticed that there were no other cars in the parking lot. I hoped this wasn’t a bad sign. I soon became affixed to a rather large black and white cow planted by the restaurant’s front door before I could think more about the empty parking lot. If Vick’s was a niche steakhouse, then the cow makes sense. I’m not sure what the cow symbolized. Beef, perhaps. Dairy, maybe. I dwelled on it all throughout our meal. So cute. The cow.
The first thing that I noticed when we entered the restaurant was that the greeting station had costume jewelry on display and for sale. We were greeted immediately by a friendly server who seated us promptly. There was one other couple in the restaurant, and it looked like they were leaving. It was the middle of the week, so that might account for the lack of patrons. The decor, too, seemed a bit dated and a little dark. While we were waiting for our appetizers, I kept telling Fred that something about the place looked strangely familiar. He worked on that side of town a few years ago, but he didn’t remember the place. Later, it finally came to me. The carpet, I blurted loudly, was the same carpet as in Perkins restaurants (we eat out so often that I remember carpet color). Fred remembered that he used to eat lunch at the restaurant when it was Perkins. The decor was for sure leftover from the old Perkins. I don’t believe that Vick’s changed any of it. Still, the atmosphere was warm and friendly, and our food was served without delay.
Menu…for Whatever You’re Craving
If you’re looking for cocktails–I was–you won’t find them at Vick’s. The restaurant is alcohol-free. I don’t believe they offer beer or wine with the exception of mimosas and magnolias. The menu is large and diverse. It starts with rather large breakfast offerings–pork chops, ribeyes, fried fish, corned beef hash, ham, and sausage with eggs and potatoes or grits. If that’s too much, Vick’s also offers an array of omelets and breakfast sandwiches.
Vick’s offers a large assortment of Angus beef burgers, salads, and hot and cold sandwiches. Fish & chips, hibachi chicken, Australian chicken, chopped steak, and country fried steak are a few of the many lunch classics available at Vick’s restaurant. The dinner menu was just as diverse as the lunch menu. The appetizers include vegetable tempura, mozzarella sticks, and corn nuggets, among many other choices. We started with steamed clams and calamari. The clams were tasty but cold, and I was convinced the calamari was frozen.
Fred ordered a porterhouse with a salad and baked potato. The steak was thin and bland. It was one of the few times that I saw Fred leave steak on his plate. He did like the dressing on the house salad. Dinner choices were many, and it was hard to choose. The menu had an international list of entrees that included steak, seafood, pasta, Wikiki chicken and many other chicken dishes and burgers. I finally settled on a special appetizer plate offered that day. It was a seafood platter. The platter came with stuffed clams and shrimp cooked four ways. The clams were fine, but I’m sure they and the shrimp were all prepacked frozen foods that were cooked to order.
Dessert choices were limited. The server told us they buy Vick’s desserts from a local bakery (name unknown). We tried them anyway. Fred had the crème brûlée with strawberries and I had the rustic apple tart. Both desserts were good, and they were the best dishes we had at Vick’s. Overall, the food didn’t meet our expectations. Breakfast and lunch choices seem reasonably priced, but dinner prices are a little high for the quality of food. They also added a gratuity to our bill. Don’t judge Vick’s Restaurant solely on my experience. Try it and decide for yourself. Vick’s doesn’t have a website, but you can check out Vick’s menu on Urbanspoon.

You can’t miss it; there’s a large black and white artificial cow parked by the front door. If you’re familiar with the Orlando area, you’ll recognize Vick’s as being in the same location as the previous Perkins restaurant.
