I’m slowly catching up on my Moogly CAL 2015 blocks. These four blocks definitely took less time than the first four. It wouldn’t take as long as except I can’t seem to do things in order. Once a new squares is released, I might crochet it before I finish a previous square. I am making progress, and I hope to be caught up late next week.
Here are my notes on blocks 5 – 8:
- Counting stitches is important. I frogged almost all four of these squares more than once (some several times), because I missed a stitch here and there. This made it nearly impossible to complete the next round after the round with the mistake.
- Video instruction is available for some of the squares. I found some of the instructions to be confusing. Watch each one. These video clips helped more than anything else.
- I’m using Lion Brand Vanna’s Choice yarn in these colors: First round = Dusty Green; second round = Dusty Purple; third round = Linen
; fourth round = Taupe
. I tried to be true to the order of colors just for consistency, but it wasn’t always the case. I used only three colors in the Windmill Square. When I got to the first border round my square was at 12 inches. I planned to use Taupe as the last border color, but it wasn’t needed. I also got the color order confused on the Springtime Lily Pond Square, but I chose not to frog it to fix the color scheme.
- I blocked each square once it was complete. I did a better job at blocking some squares more than others, and I might fix this later on by steam blocking the uneven squares.
- I used a size I hook. My squares are roughly 11-3/4 to 12-inches each. I may go back and add a row of single crochet to the squares just under 12-inches. I did add another row to the Springtime Lily Pond Square to help make the 12 inches. I ended up not adding the last border on the Windmill Square since my square was already 12-inches.
My favorite this time around is the Springtime Lily Pond Square. I liked the inner circle pattern and the four flower corners, which would be more appealing in colors other than those I chose for the CAL. The Pinwheel Afghan Square was most challenging. I followed the pattern, and cut yarn when I changed colors like the designer did. This was tedious, and I’m afraid it might fall apart when washed. I’d like to find another way to crochet this design without so many snippets of yarn.
