It’s the perfect time of the year to start thinking about sun dresses. Make these Easy Summer Sun Dresses in a couple of hours—all you need is pre-smocked material, thread, and a sewing machine. No pattern is necessary!
I picked up Disney® Frozen and Doc McStuffins presmocked fabric by the inch at Joann’s, but colorful presmocked fabric is also available by the yard on amazon.com.
Most of the character presmocked fabric is cotton. I highly recommend you wash, dry, and iron the fabric before you make your dress. This will prevent the fabric from fraying and shrinking after it is cut.
- For the dress, measure your bust size and add 1″ for a child’s dress and up to 2″ more for an adult; add 4″ if shoulder straps are desired for a child’s dress and 2″ for an adult dress. Cut fabric to the desired length, if necessary, leaving a 1/2″ seam allowance.
- Stitch back seam of the dress with right sides together using a 5/8″ seam allowance. Press the seam open.
- To hem the dress, turn under fabric 1/4″; press. Turn under 1/4″ again; press and top stitch. Press hem.
- Using the extra fabric, cut four pieces 2″ wide. Stitch seam along the length of each strap with right sides together using a 5/8″ seam allowance. Turn, press and sew straps in place. Makes two straps.
- Press dress.
