Drawer Organizing Challenge – My Baking Drawers and Cabinets
Welcome to the Drawer Organization Blog Hop! For the entire month of April, 12 bloggers will be sharing the process of cleaning and organizing one drawer in our homes each week. To kick off the first week, we’re focusing on drawers in our kitchen and dining rooms!
I have a lot of baking tools and gadgets, candy sprinkles, cupcake baking tins, holiday-themed decorating kits – well, you get the picture. If not, check out my baking cabinets and drawers before I reorganized them. The cabinet is my favorite. I usually get hit in the head with something that falls out every time I open the cabinet. Such disorganization really slows me down while I’m baking. It’s often difficult to find the tools I need to use. Things are so buried that I have been known to buy the same tool again. It’s easier than looking for it. It’s also wasteful. Reorganizing these drawers and cabinets has been on my to-do list for months.
Tips for reorganizing baking drawers and cabinets
Step 1: Plan and Organize Using Available Space
Start by deciding how much room you really have for storage and organization. If you don’t have a lot of space, you won’t be able to keep everything in one place. Decide what really needs to be on hand in the kitchen and what can be stored somewhere else in your house. I have a few things that are only used once a year like a pizzelle maker and cannoli forms. These are slated for storage somewhere else. The pizzelle maker takes up room that I need. You’ll also need to decide if you’re going to use storage containers, baskets, or just the cabinet shelves or drawers to organize and store your baking items.
Step 2: Sort and Categorize
Empty your cabinets and drawers onto a large space like your kitchen or dining room table. Then put items into categories. For my baking tools, I organized most everything by holiday or season. Items that didn’t fit in the holiday group were generally baking gadgets. These I put those in a separate group. I ended up with a pile of gadgets, tools, and baking accessories for Easter, Halloween (my biggest stash), Christmas, Patriotic, New Year’s, Mardi Gras, Thanksgiving, Autumn, Spring, and Valentine’s Day. I also added a group for Birthdays and Cake Decorating Tools.
Step 3: Label and Store
I used 10 Rubbermaid containers to store all of my baking goods. The containers fit two on a shelf or four in a drawer. I also used a label maker to mark the group on each container to help me find what I need fast.
Finally, place the containers where you plan to store them. I keep mine on the left side of my stove in the Upper cabinet and lower cabinet. I find this to be my go-to place when I’m cooking or decorating.
