31 Days of Halloween – Day 14
A retro recipe for caramel-taffy apples.
Caramel Apples Recipe
I decided a long time ago that it was easier to make caramel from scratch than it was to open a hundred or so individually wrapped caramels. If kids were around, I made them open the caramels but then I had to be willing to give up more than a few of them. This year, I used an old Good Housekeeping recipe for caramel-taffy apples, and dressed them in Wilton Spider Mix Sprinkles.
- 6 washed medium apples
- 6 popsicle sticks
- 1 cup granulated sugar
- 1/2 cup white corn syrup
- 1 can sweetened condensed milk
- 1 teaspoon vanilla
- Wilton Spider Mix Sprinkles
- Wash and dry apples. Insert popsicle stick into stem end of each apple.
- In medium heavy saucepan, combine sugar, corn syrup, condensed milk, and vanilla. Cook slowly, stirring constantly, to 230°F on candy thermometer, or until a little mixture in cold water forms a very stiff ball. Working quickly, dip each apple into caramel, twirling it until well coated. Place, apples on well buttered dish. Coat with spider mix sprinkles as desired.
